The Queen Emma Research Fund (QERF) provides funding (up to $25,000) for original, scientifically sound clinical research performed at The Queen's Medical Center or affiliated facilities. QERF funding is intended for projects which will lead to advancements in scientific and medical knowledge, and for feasibility and pilot studies that can be used when applying for other grants. All QMC Medical Staff, Allied Health Professionals and Hospital Staff are eligible to apply!
Deadlines
Deadlines for submitting applications will generally occur roughly every six (6) months. The next submission deadline will be August 29, 2008. A decision on funding should be reached by November 30, 2008.
Instructions
Please submit research proposals in electronic Word (PC) format as follows:
- Title, Investigators and Department(s)
- CVs of all Investigators
- Abstract (1 page)
- Specific Aims: Concisely describe the short-term and long-term goals of the study. Outline any hypothesis to be tested. (1-2 pages)
- Background and Significance: Describe the existing knowledge and gaps in knowledge which will be addressed by the study. Review the current literature and use references to support the arguments. Explain the clinical significance of the study. Also indicate how this study will be used as the basis for any future research or programs. (2-3 pages)
- Study design: Describe the patient population to be studied or the source of information. Define the inclusion and exclusion criteria and provide an estimate of the number of patients to be studied. Identify where these patients will be recruited from and provide evidence that a sufficient number of these patients are available. Provide details of the procedures, treatments, testing data collection and the projected analysis of the data. Identify the departments, equipment, personnel and other necessary resources in order for the study to be successful. (no more than 10 pages)
- Budget: Provide an estimate of the total study budget. Itemize as much as possible providing justification as appropriate. When the budget exceeds $25,000, identify other sources of funding and their status (likelihood of funding, timelines etc).
- Human Subject participation: Briefly discuss the risks and benefits to the patient. It is useful to prepare a draft informed consent.

Review process: All protocols will be reviewed by the Queen Emma Research Fund Review Committee, and the Scientific Review Committee as needed per QMC Policy. Reviewers will consider scientific design, relevance to Queen's Medical Center's mission, clinical and scientific importance, and feasibility. Equipment such as computers, printers and other specialized devices are not usually funded except under certain conditions and, if granted, they may remain the property of QMC. Travel support is generally not granted. All clinical research proposals will also require approval by the Research and Institutional Review Committee to evaluate Human Subject Risks/Benefits and review Informed Consents before funding can be released.
