Description
The Summer Research Internship (SRI) is an eight-week program designed for undergraduate college students interested in the medical field and clinical research. The SRI has four components:
- didactic research education
- participation in conducting a research project
- clinical job "shadowing"
- cultural experience
At the end of the eight weeks, students will present their research to their peers, research mentors and family.
Program Dates and Time Commitment Expected from the Student
The SRI will be conducted from June 16-August 8, 2008. Student interns must be available to begin the program on June 16, 2008, and should be present for the entire eight weeks. To complete their assignments during the eight-week period, interns should be willing to make a commitment of 35-40 hours per week.
Deadlines and Notification
To be considered for the internship, candidates will complete:
- 2008 Application Form
- Personal Statement/Essay
- Resume
- College Transcripts (unofficial copies of transcripts are acceptable)
All of the items must be postmarked or electronically submitted to the Department of Research Planning and Development on or before Thursday, February 28, 2008. Student interns are selected competitively on the basis of overall qualifications and interests. All candidates must be college students (entered Freshman to Senior year for 2007-2008) and should have an interest in health-related careers. Students who are planning to graduate from college in Spring 2008 are still eligible for this program.
A personal statement of about 500 words should include the student's reason(s) for applying to the program, what the student expects to learn from the program, personal and career goals, and how this program would help in achieving them. The intent of the personal statement is to give the selection committee a more personalized view of the student.
A maximum of 12 students (8 based at The Queen's Medical Center, 4 based at The Department of Native Hawaiian Health) will be selected and notified by the end of March. Applicants may be contacted by phone prior to this date if more information is needed.
Placement Conditions
Each participant will be matched with a clinical research project. Every effort will be made to consider the interns interests and qualifications when assigned to a project.
All positions are voluntary; interns will not be hired as employees of Queen's Medical Center for the Summer Research Internship. The interns will not be paid during the program, but will receive an award of $1,500 upon presentation of their project at the awards ceremony.
Parking arrangements are the responsibility of the student. Some projects may require travel to and from the study site to Queen's Medical Center.
Duties
Research interns will attend didactic research education workshops, lectures by physicians and researchers, tours of medical facilities, and cultural excursions. These sessions will be helpful when working directly with a Principal Investigator (PI). Interns will be given instructional support on the following tasks that are typically performed in a research project:
- Conduct a literature review and summarize the findings. This serves to familiarize the student with the current state of knowledge as well as to provide a basis for the introduction and discussion for the final paper.
- Critically review the data collection instrument and study protocol. This procedure must be well thought out in order to obtain the information necessary to answer the research questions.
- Assist in collecting study data through reviewing medical records, interviewing or testing patients, or other means.
- Develop a computer database or continue one already established; enter data and validate it.
- Analyze data, applying appropriate statistical tests and interpreting the results.
- Prepare a final report including the documentation of study methods, analysis of findings, and sufficient information that a project may be completed or interpreted after the student leaves.
- Present research subject matter, hypotheses, and results to an audience of health care professionals and non-professionals, using PowerPoint or a poster presentation
Interns will work closely with a PI on a research project; the specific duties to accomplish each research project may vary. Each intern is responsible for coordinating and carrying out his or her assignments to accomplish project objectives, under the direction of the PI. Interns will complete a written project report describing their work and present an oral summary at a reception held during the last week of the program.
Interns are expected to dress, speak and conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times during the internship.
